How to Choose the Right Lumber for Your New Jersey Project

New Jersey’s climate — humid summers, wet winters — puts real demands on building materials. Choosing the wrong wood can lead to warping, rot, or structural failure within years. Here’s what contractors and homeowners in Bergen County need to know before buying lumber.

Pressure-Treated vs. Untreated: For any outdoor application — decks, fences, ground contact — PT lumber is required by NJ building code. For interior framing, kiln-dried dimensional lumber (SPF) is the standard. Common dimensions: 2x4s for interior walls, 2x6s for exterior/load-bearing, 4x4 and 4x6 posts for decks and fencing.

Bergen County code tip: Inspectors require PT rated UC4B or UC4C for posts in concrete or soil. Deck boards can use UC3B. Our team can help you spec the right grade before you buy — avoiding costly substitutions mid-job.

Complete Guide to Electrical & Plumbing Supplies for NJ Home Renovations

Getting the right materials — and understanding NJ code — is essential to passing inspection and staying on schedule. Here’s what licensed trades and DIY renovators need to know.

Electrical: 14 AWG for 15A lighting circuits; 12 AWG for kitchen/bath/garage 20A circuits; 10 AWG for dryers and A/C. NJ code requires GFCI in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoors. AFCI breakers required for bedrooms in major renovations. EMT or PVC conduit for exposed runs. Plumbing: PVC for drain/waste/vent; CPVC for hot and cold supply; copper for long-term durability; PEX for retrofits. All plumbing work in NJ requires a permit. Inspectors check pipe support, drain slope (min. 1⁄4" per foot), and correct materials for application.
